What to expect

The Shiatsu treatment is given on a soft futon mattress on the floor, although it is possible to receive Shiatsu on a chair or couch if the client is unable to lie down. This allows the practitioner to use various rocking, stretching and manipulation techniques which are otherwise difficult to do on a massage table.

During the treatment the client remains fully clothed. For best results, the receiver is advised to wear loose fitting and comfortable clothes, preferably made of natural fibres.

An average treatment lasts about 60 minutes. The first session may be slightly longer as the practitioner will need to take a detailed case history to develop a complete picture of the client’s health according to the principles of oriental medicine.

After a Shiatsu treatment the client will often feel relaxed. Clients may also feel a little light headed as the blood flow to the brain is increased. It is therefore recommended that they drink lots of fluids.

Occasionally as part of the healing transformation and the body's clearing out of toxins, clients will experience muscle aches, tiredness, emotional sensitivity etc. However, these sensations are generally mild and normally only last for a day or so, after which the body feels fresh and recharged.

These effects can be seen as a natural progression in the Shiatsu experience. By releasing the energy in the form of a symptom or emotion the body is beginning to rebalance and heal.
